Understanding Rooftop Solar
What is a rooftop solar system?

A rooftop solar system uses solar panels installed on a suitable roof to generate electricity from sunlight. The electricity can be used within the property, reducing the power purchased from the grid. The right system depends on electricity consumption, sanctioned load, usable roof area, shadow conditions, and technical feasibility.

Solar panels generate direct current electricity during the day. An inverter converts it into alternating current electricity for use in the home or business. When permitted under the applicable net-metering arrangement, surplus generation is exported to the grid. When solar generation is insufficient, electricity is imported from the grid. Billing is based on applicable Discom regulations and tariffs.

A standard on-grid system automatically shuts down during a grid outage to protect utility personnel and equipment. Backup during a power cut requires a compatible hybrid or off-grid system, batteries and prescribed safety equipment. GK Energy can recommend the appropriate configuration after assessing your backup requirements.

Rooftop solar can be suitable for homes, housing societies, shops, offices, institutions and industrial facilities that have adequate, structurally sound and sufficiently shade-free roof space. Electricity usage, connection type, sanctioned load, roof ownership and local approvals also affect feasibility. A site survey is the best way to confirm suitability.

How is the required solar capacity calculated?

We review your electricity consumption, recent bills, sanctioned load, daytime usage, available roof area, orientation, shading and applicable utility rules. An initial estimate can be prepared from your electricity bill; the final capacity and design are confirmed after document review and a technical site survey.

The requirement varies with module wattage, roof type, layout, access pathways, setbacks, and shadows. As a broad planning reference, approximately 60 to 80 square feet of usable, shade-free area may be required per kW. The actual area is confirmed through a site survey and layout design.

Savings depend on solar generation, electricity tariff, system size, self-consumption, roof orientation, shading, maintenance and changes in consumption after installation. Many suitable residential systems can substantially reduce the variable portion of the electricity bill, but fixed charges and other applicable charges may continue. GK Energy will provide an indicative estimate based on your bill and site conditions.

We generally require your name, mobile number, installation location, pin code, property type, monthly bill range, and a recent electricity bill. These details help us assess the connection, consumption, and likely system capacity before scheduling the next step.

Is government subsidy available for rooftop solar?

Eligible residential consumers may receive Central Financial Assistance under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, subject to the prevailing scheme guidelines, approved components, vendor requirements, portal process, inspection and successful commissioning. The currently notified subsidy is Rs 30,000 for 1 kW, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW, and up to Rs 78,000 for systems of 3 kW or above. Scheme terms may be amended by the government.

The residential subsidy does not apply to ordinary commercial or industrial rooftop projects. Eligible Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Associations may receive assistance in qualifying common facilities under the prevailing scheme. Commercial and industrial customers typically evaluate solar through electricity-cost savings, applicable tax treatment, and financing.

Net metering is an approved billing arrangement in which a bidirectional meter records electricity imported from and exported to the grid. Exported energy is adjusted or settled in accordance with applicable Discom regulations and Discom procedures. The grid should not be considered a battery, and approval remains subject to technical and regulatory conditions.

GK Energy or its authorised partner supports customers with document requirements, application stages, technical submissions, and coordination. Customers must provide accurate documents, signatures, access, payments, and confirmations on time. Application approval, inspection, meter activity and subsidy disbursement remain under the control of the relevant government authorities, Discoms and participating banks.

Timelines depend on application completeness, technical feasibility, site readiness, MSEDCL workload, meter availability, inspection, and government portal processing. GK Energy will provide stage-wise updates and actively coordinate the process but cannot guarantee timelines controlled by external authorities.
